Introducing RT Messages
RT Messages is a set of Final Cut Pro X title templates that allow you to simulate text messages being sent and received. Create realistic text messages of any length, accurately position them on the screen with adjustable alignment guides; choose from standard message colors or choose your own; add optional avatars, images and videos; add 3-dot incoming messages and enhance your texts with familiar sound effects. Create text scrolls using the included template or animate them using keyframes.
We have created help movies for each individual plugin in RT Messages.
Software version: FCP 10.6.1 or later
Using Chat Text
Drag and drop text or image chats to your project and trim to your desired length. Edit the chat and reposition and scale as needed. Choose from standard chat colors or customize the colors. Include emojis and optional avatars. Use guides to check message alignment.
Adding Sound Effects
RT Messages includes an FCP X library with a set of familiar text sounds enclosed inside an audition clip for quickly swapping between them. Markers are provided to make it easy to align them to each text message.
Using Chat Incoming and Chat Image
Chat Incoming adds animated 3-dot text of any duration to your project. Chat Image lets you add a photo or video to your chat, including graphics with transparency via drop zones. Easily position and scale the drop zone as needed.
Animate Scrolling Messages
If you’d like your text messages to move up the screen as each new one arrives, use our pre-keyframed set of animated titles in the included FCP X library, or create custom message scrolls by keyframing them yourself.

I was experimenting with a few ideas for how I might use RT Messages in future while all my current work is either on hold or cancelled. This morning I received an email from an existing client asking about extending a postponed educational awards project (for school age children) to include some video training materials. Given the target audience, the client is keen that sharing progress on social media will be a feature of the new videos (if of course, the job gets the go ahead!)
I was able to reply same day with examples using footage we have already shot due to the ‘user friendliness’ of RT Messages, instead of posting a link to a demo, or someone else’s work to illustrate the possibilities.
I think Ripple have excelled themselves (again!) with this product, and would encourage everyone to check it out.

Mark Spencer’s command of Motion comes through loud and clear in RT Messages. It’s a fun complement to RT TitleMations and RT Callouts, showing careful attention to usability and detail. In addition to the RT Messages tutorials, Mac Break Studio episodes 398 and 491 provide an “under the hood” look at the plugin and how it was developed. Given the effort (Spencer estimates about 100 hours of work), the plugin is very fairly priced. I’d love to see RT make “under the hood” videos for future plugins as well. They teach a lot, and show purchasers how much expertise and effort goes into the development of these products.

I’m a filmmaker with a love of (nearly) silent movies. As such I look for ways for the actors to express themselves without spoken dialog. My latest film, Last Day, employs the old standard found in early films, with slides of the words spoken. That worked, but with today’s audiences I think a text message format would be interesting to experiment with. RT Messages is made to order for the task.
Speaking from experience, there are many ways people hang themselves with text messages, and I plan to exploit a few of those in an upcoming picture. I’m extremely fortunate to have an attractive young woman, Libby, as my perennial star, who like other young people is a whiz with texting. I can’t wait to put the two together — Libby and RT Messages.
