Learn The Fundamentals of Lighting
In Lighting the Interview, Abba Shapiro begins with teaching you why you need to control and the shape light in your interview setups. This goes beyond the basic notion of merely needing to illuminate your subject, and introduces you to some of the artistic elements of lighting to draw in your viewers.
Light Your Subject Anywhere
Every interview is different, and each location presents different lighting challenges. Whether your subject is in a bright outdoor location or in a tiny office space with no windows, this tutorial will show you how to get a great image.
Light with No Lights
Sometimes the best interview lighting is the available light around you. You’ll learn how to achieve great lighting with household items around you, and in this particular case, a shower curtain.
Create Pools of Light
Lighting large spaces where the subject is required to move around can be challenging. Abba will teach you how to augment available light in the room with strategically placed lighting fixtures so both the subject and environment are covered adequately.

This is a great introduction to lighting and I know I use a lot of the techniques shown. I like the lower 3rds that came in occasionally to add a little more information, they are a real enhancement. Abba has a very clear way of communicating that I found easy to absorb. The tricks and cheats could be a lifesaver at times. I hope Ripple is going to make the advanced course mentioned – I’ll be in the queue to sign up. Thank you.

Really enjoyed this! How come the “advanced lighting” has not yet been produced? I would definitely go for it!

Quite good.

Simple, straight forward and free of jargon. Really looking forward to the advanced lighting course and other production-related courses in the future.

I have been shooting corporate videos for around 7 years, mainly self taught regarding lighting. Knowing Abba’s level of expertise generally I thought the price of the tutorial worth the risk that I would just be taught stuff I more or less knew – it was worth the price and more – the course certainly covers the basics, but goes comfortably beyond and I picked up so many useful tips – plus an introduction to a range of lighting solutions I had not considered before – excellent course, delivers exactly what is promised – would love to see an advanced lighting course some time.

Wonderfull training video for lighting, straight to the point using non technical terms and explaining in a way any one can follow.
I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn the basics of lighting, it will improve your skill set immensely.

Very helpful. I had to do a shoot last minute and needed a quick guide on sit down interview lighting. The subject matter is evergreen in nature, so unlike with software, you don’t have to worry about buying lessons that will go out of date in a year. I would recommend it to any beginner, or anyone who wants new ideas about how to accomplish pro lighting on any budget.

So far I have really enjoyed not only this tutorial but others as well; I have the Ripple app for Motion as well and it’s a great teaching. My only critique would be to slow things down just a bit for beginners like myself, however I do realize I can watch them over and over. Thanks so much for your site; I plan on buying many more of your tutorials and FCP plugins in the future.

If you are interested in learning about cinematography this is the first place to start. A fun high quality tutorial from Ripple! Abba Shapiro is a fun and interesting instructor.

This is a really excellent and practical explanation and walkthrough of important lighting concepts complete with the practical application of the concepts and principles. While I’m still not qualified to be a director of lighting on larger productions, this tutorial has really been helpful for all of the interviews and small scale video productions that we produce where there is no budget for dedicated grip and lighting crew.

You could quite literally spend multiple hundreds of dollars attending a lighting session that covers the topics on this video. So it’s unreal to see something like this offered for under $50. Money well spent as far as I’m concerned.

I have found this really useful for learning how to interview for video production (albeit, mostly for friends and family). I’m at present commencing a video series for my family’s archival needs and this has provided me some great insight and ideas.

This tutorial is amazing. I love that they go through the gear but more importantly the WHY. My company has been doing interviews for the past two years and we had some basic good lighting setups. But the 3-point lighting technique makes it a whole new ballgame. The presenters are so good at what they do. I love the fact that Abba (at least it seems) knows this stuff so well he doesn’t need cue cards. I learned a lot of great tips; you should buy this and all their tutorials.

I am subscribed to the Ripple Training newsletter and I ordered this when I opened their email. I have been an editor for years, used Ripple Training the entire time. My business has prospered and now I’m needing camera and lighting skills. Great video. I whipped through this in no time and came away with confidence that my next interview will be on an entirely different level. When’s the next lighting tutorial?
How about Audio – the interview? How do you get that single voice to sound as great as the visual?

As usual, Ripple Training is producing quality tutorials for everyone. This is a simple, clear and concise set of videos. I picked up quite a few useful points, but will not elaborate as you should buy this to help them produce more great material. It must have been ‘fun’ lighting a set to talk about lighting a set and still being able to film with the lights off at times. Keep up the excellent work. I did learn one thing, we all need an Abba on a shoot.

I’ve been in video production for nearly 30 years, both on location filming and editing but more that latter in recent years. Regardless of this I still try to keep up with knowledge and trends so not to become a dinosaur. I don’t have an ego to stroke, thinking “I know everything”. I purchase this training series in the hopes I may pick up something new, and sure enough, I did. For 50 bucks who knows you may pick up something so do yourself a favor, it could be worth it. Thanks guys.
